ZULMIRO DE CARVALHO, an open dialogue
Exhibition Bienal Internacional de Arte Gaia
“Zulmiro de Carvalho, born in 1940, sculptor, creator of numerous works of public art installed in Portugal and abroad, approaches drawing as he does sculpture, which reveals some of his most solid values and the establishment of a basic, sober vocabulary, but endowed with a subtlety that allows him to introduce themes and ideas and go beyond what could be seen as mere formality.”
It’s through this brief description of his work that ours came alive, not by trying to document this exhibition or the sculptures therein, but exploring and reinterpreting the shapes, games of light and shadow, that are so alive in the author’s expressiveness and body of work. From landscapes into landscapes, raw materials to imaginary locations, the lines close in on us with an almost primal notion of spatiality and ambience. Parcial (Partial) is the search for a meaning within a meaning, where the answer lies in the details.
